After Tom's opening we went to dinner at Grand Sichuan at 24th Street and 9th Avenue, NYC. We were supposed to have dinner with Tom Nozkowski, Joyce Robins, John Yau and Eve Ashheim, but that took a different turn. John went home to pick up Eve and Cerise (who weren't at the opening), Tom and Joyce were getting tired and were going to drive home to High Falls, so they left. We had a reservation for six people and the people at the restaurant wouldn't seat us unless there were six of us present. Tom saw Kathy Goncharov, who he knew from Rutgers waiting for a table and greeted her. I asked her and the woman she was with if they would like to sit at our table, which would make six people again. They agreed to do that. Tom and Joyce left, but John and Eve and Cerise hadn't arrived yet. The host at the restaurant kept threatening to give away our table, I kept negotiating with him for another five minutes. It also turned out the host was already mad at Kathy and her friend for going to sit at another table that was not technically theirs. Eve and John and Cerise finally arrived and we got to get our table. Dinner was delicious and we had a good time with our new acquaintances.
